If you are nodding along and you and your family have had that teeth gritted dishwasher discussion too many times than you care to remember then I am hoping that I can help a little. I want you to think of me as your intermediary, a mediator if you will!
Here are my top tips for getting the most out of your dishwasher.
- There is no need to rinse your plates before you put them in the dishwasher. The best thing to do is to scrape everything off the plates into the bin before you put them in the machine.
- When loading the cutlery basket make sure that any sharp knives are loaded with their points down (for safety reasons). Forks and spoons can be put in either up or down but it is best to make sure that you change it up a bit to make sure that they don’t nestle together, which might mean that they don’t wash properly.
- When loading the machine you need to think about the jets of water that will be hitting your dishes during the cycle. If you are loading in lots of plates then make sure that they face inwards so that the water can get to the dishes.
- If your dishwasher is only half full and it is going to be a few hours until it will be full enough to start the cycle then it is a good idea to pop on the short rinse cycle. This will make sure that the food doesn’t get dried on.
- When unloading the dishwasher start with the bottom layer first. This will make sure that there will be no drips from the top tray.
- Every few weeks run the dishwasher on empty on its hottest wash with a cup of white vinegar. This will help to keep it running smoothly and get rid of all the limescale in the pipes. Don’t forget to download the TeamTOMM app which will remind you when to do this!
What not to put in the dishwasher:
Wooden spoons and chopping boards as these will swell and split over time. Hand-painted china. Fancy chef knives (make sure you check whether they are dishwasher safe).
